Mastercard Begins Rolling Out AI Agent Payments Service With Coinbase, Base

Key Takeaways

Mastercard Opens Up Agentic Payments

The payments giant announced Tuesday that it completed end-to-end pilots of its Agent Pay for Machines platform with partners including Cloudflare, Ant International, AIsa, Base, BVNK, Coinbase, and Hype. Mastercard is also opening early access to developers, providing tools to build and test autonomous payment applications.

The technology allows AI agents to purchase services such as data, computing power, and image generation while operating within spending limits established by their human operators.

Mastercard showcased the system at Cloudflare Connect through a demonstration involving Hype, a marketing agency that uses AI agents to develop advertising campaigns.

In the demonstration, Hype tasked an AI agent with planning a promotional campaign for a protein bar launch. The agent identified services needed to complete the assignment, including social media research from AIsa and image generation through Cloudflare AI Gateway.

After receiving budget approval, the agent completed nine payments across the two providers, purchasing research and generating eight campaign images without establishing separate accounts or billing relationships.

The system relies on x402, an open payment protocol that allows online services to request payment using the HTTP 402 status code. When an AI agent encounters a paid service, it generates a digitally signed payment voucher within its authorized budget. The service provider verifies the voucher before delivering the requested service.

These transactions occur offchain, allowing payments to be authorized rapidly, while providers can aggregate vouchers and redeem them later. Crypto infrastructure plays a central role in the arrangement. Coinbase Developer Platform supplies wallet infrastructure, while the Coinbase-backed Ethereum Layer 2 network Base handles blockchain settlement.

BVNK—which Mastercard acquired this year for $1.8 billion—provides the agent wallet functionality and uses Mastercard’s Global Money Platform to facilitate payments and settlement in traditional currencies or stablecoins. Sellers can receive funds through their preferred payment methods.

The demonstration follows Mastercard’s June launch of Agent Pay for Machines, which introduced a framework for high-frequency, low-value transactions between autonomous software systems. The initiative initially attracted support from more than 30 industry participants, including Coinbase, Stripe, Ripple, Polygon, and the Solana Foundation.

AI Payments Go Mainstream?

Mastercard is positioning itself as a trust and authorization layer for an emerging economy in which AI agents independently purchase digital resources. The company said its early-access program now offers buyer- and seller-side APIs, developer documentation, and a testing environment.

Although the demonstrations establish the technology’s potential, broader adoption remains dependent on developers integrating the system and businesses trusting autonomous agents to manage expenditures.

The development also highlights a growing role for blockchain networks and stablecoins in AI-driven commerce, where automated software may need to execute numerous small transactions across different service providers.
